How to pick the perfect font for your project

When designing anything from a logo to a brochure or even a website, sometimes one of the hardest things to do is pick the perfect font. There are so many options nowadays, that it can be really difficult. To help you in this process, let’s identify the seven classifications of type. The classifications are: roman, sans serif, slab serif, script, italics, blackletter, and decorative.

• Roman typefaces are also called serif typefaces, and are easily identifiable by the little “feet” at the end of the letters. They are modeled after the European scribal manuscript style of the 1400s. These typefaces are usually used in body copy and printed material.

• Sans serif typefaces are classified by having not serifs, hence the sans in the name. This typeface has less variation in line weight and are sometimes called linear fonts. They are commonly used in logos, websites, and printed material.

• Slab serif typefaces are classified by having serifs, but the brackets (area where the serif and stem/ascender meet) are at 90 degree angles and much thicker. This typeface was first produced by Vincent Figgins. They are usually used for posters, logos, and printed materials.

• Script typefaces are identified by looking like handwriting or calligraphy. The characters are typically connected. They are usually used for greeting cards, invitations, logos, and headlines.

• Italic typefaces are unique characters that are slanted to the right. Oblique is the term for fonts that are slanted to the right but with no change is character. This means when you set some fonts to italic, they are not necessarily really italic. This typeface is usually used to add emphasis, for headlines, and algebraic symbols and mathematical constants.

• Blackletter typefaces look like old style handwriting. They’re a direct ancestor of the Carolingian Miniscule and most notably used for the Gutenberg Bible. This typeface is most commonly used for beer labels, logos, album artwork, and wedding invitations.

• Decorative typefaces have artistic or extreme features. Sometimes they are called display or ornamental fonts. They are usually used in logos, headlines, posters, invitations, and greeting cards.
